An electronic signature enables verification of who signed a document and whether the signed data has changed. The process uses certificates and cryptographic keys.

What happens during signing?

A mathematical digest of the data is calculated. The signer's private key is used to generate a digital signature associated with that data. A qualified electronic certificate links the public key used for verification to the signer's identity.

How is the signature verified?

Verification software checks the signed data and evaluates the certificate. Certificate chain trust, revocation status and any timestamp are relevant parts of validation.

Does signing make a document confidential?

No. Signing and encryption are different operations. A signed document is not automatically protected from being read by others. Apply suitable access controls and encryption separately when confidentiality is required.

What should the user do?

• Read the document before signing.
• Check that the correct certificate is selected.
• Do not share the device or PIN.
• Keep the original electronically signed file.
